I’ve learned that as soon as the first few guests arrive, things get dirty – especially if they have kids! I remind myself that people aren’t coming over to be impressed or to check on how clean I keep house. People are coming over to enjoy time with you!
If guests have young children, scan your home to make sure there isn’t anything valuable within reach. You want your guests to be comfortable and able to enjoy themselves without worrying about their children damaging something that can’t be replaced.

Make sure your holiday workhouse is ready for action. Avoid harsh cleaners, which will make the kitchen smell pretty unappetizing. The self-cleaning feature could actually damage your oven, so experts recommend using two simple ingredients for a fresh, clean oven: water and lemons.
Cast-Iron Pots and Pans
Cast iron will allow you to get the most flavor out of your holiday dishes. Whether your pans are well-loved or new, make sure they’re clean and seasoned so they’re ready for cooking.
Platters and Serving Dishes
Because serveware isn’t used too often, it may be in need of a dusting and a good scrub. Plan out what you’ll serve on each dish, and wash accordingly.
Storage Containers
It’s nice to have spare takeout containers or old Tupperware you don’t mind giving away for any leftovers your guests might want, so save some up! Then, when guests want to take leftovers, you can send them home with no concern about returning the container. Make sure all containers are completely clean and the cabinet holding them is tidy.
