Five Things to Clean Before Hosting for the Holidays

The holiday season can be a chaotic time of year, especially if you’re hosting dinner, throwing a party or welcoming overnight guests. So it’s a good idea to get some essential hosting tools clean and ready before the season gets hectic.

Personally, when I host, I focus on having the house picked up, uncluttered, and welcoming. I make sure the bathroom is clean, but don’t stress myself out by having to have everything spotless. I’ve learned that as soon as the first few guests arrive, things get dirty – especially if they have kids! I remind myself that people aren’t coming over to be impressed or to check on how clean I keep house. People are coming over to enjoy time with you!

If guests have young children, scan your home to make sure there isn’t anything valuable within reach. You want your guests to be comfortable and able to enjoy themselves without worrying about their children damaging something that can’t be replaced.

And remember – if you don’t have time to clean or don’t have something you need to serve dinner or seat your guests, give Broadway Tent & Event a call!

If you happen to be someone who enjoys cleaning (or you need the threat of company coming as an incentive to get some cleaning projects done), here are a few things to clean now in preparation for the busy season to come, courtesy of Real Simple.

The Refrigerator

With food to prepare and guests’ contributions to store, you’ll need to free up all available fridge space. Toss old and expired food, then take everything out and give the shelves a good scrub.

The Oven

Make sure your holiday workhouse is ready for action. Avoid harsh cleaners, which will make the kitchen smell pretty unappetizing. The self-cleaning feature could actually damage your oven, so experts recommend using two simple ingredients for a fresh, clean oven: water and lemons.

Cast-Iron Pots and Pans

Cast iron will allow you to get the most flavor out of your holiday dishes. Whether your pans are well-loved or new, make sure they’re clean and seasoned so they’re ready for cooking.

Platters and Serving Dishes

Because serveware isn’t used too often, it may be in need of a dusting and a good scrub. Plan out what you’ll serve on each dish, and wash accordingly.

Storage Containers

It’s nice to have spare takeout containers or old Tupperware you don’t mind giving away for any leftovers your guests might want, so save some up!  Then, when guests want to take leftovers, you can send them home with no concern about returning the container. Make sure all containers are completely clean and the cabinet holding them is tidy.
