Small weddings – often referred to as micro weddings – have grown increasingly popular in recent years. Now, in the face of the coronavirus and social distancing regulations, a small wedding has become one of the only options for couples wishing to get married in the next few months. And the good news is, there are quite a few benefits to hosting a micro wedding, from lower costs to the more intimate, personal feel of a small event!
What do couples need to know while planning a micro wedding? We have a few tips.
Choose a Location
The backyard of a family member or friend is likely to be the easiest and budget-friendliest option. It’s also the most flexible – if the situation changes and you have to postpone, you won’t be out a significant rental space deposit.
If you go the backyard micro wedding route, you’ll need to rent party equipment like tables, chairs, audiovisual equipment and décor. A tent may also be a good idea. This will add some expense, but there are many benefits to renting – cost being just one consideration.
Plan the Guest List
There are two main considerations to keep in mind when planning the guest list for your micro wedding: safety and space. If you’re in a small backyard, the guest list will have to be kept small. Additionally, if your state social distancing guidelines restrict gatherings over a certain number of people, you’ll have to limit your guests to that number.
Consider Live Streaming
Consider setting up a webcam or Zoom meeting so friends and family can still see you tie the knot – even if they can’t be there in person.
Make a Backup Plan
In addition to the usual threats of bad weather, the uncertainty of coronavirus means that plans may need to change at the last minute. Come up with a few contingency plans just in case. One thing to consider is the things that need to be planned and prepared for in advance, and can’t be changed at the last minute – for example, deciding that you want a tent because of the weather forecast. Get Creative
Shrinking the guest list may give you more time to add personal touches to your special day. Could you create a few crafty favors for guests, or make the décor more lavish? Similarly, you may have trouble securing vendors to do hair, makeup, or florals, so it may be a good idea to watch a few tutorials and practice, just in case.
