A baby’s first birthday is a momentous occasion. Not just for the baby, but also for the parents, who have made it through a year of sleep deprivation, diapers, and stress – and, of course, intense joy and happiness.
Because a first birthday comes after such a tiring year, why not keep the party low-key? The guest of honor won’t remember it, after all!
Here are a few tips for throwing a sweet, memorable, and simple first birthday party.
Choose a Theme
It may seem like a theme would complicate a party, but that isn’t necessarily true! By choosing a theme, you’re taking a lot of the thought out of food and décor – just follow the theme when buying plates, decorations, and the cake. A theme can be as simple as you want it. Choose an animal, a season, or even just a color.
Make Baby the Focus
You know those hundreds (or thousands) of baby photos on your phone? Print out a couple dozen of your favorites (ideally, delivered in the mail) and tape them up around the house for guests to view.
Delegate
You’ll likely have grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends offering to help with the party – take them up on it!
Rent
Instead of running around and buying or borrowing silverware, glassware, tables and chairs, consider renting! It’s an easy, low-cost way to make sure you have everything you need. (Tip: picking up party rentals is a great task to delegate to a family member.)
Offer Input on Gifts
Guests may be wondering what to give the birthday boy or girl – do they need toys, books, or clothes? Consider letting guests know in advance if there is something specific you want or need. Or you may want to forgo gifts entirely! It’s perfectly okay to say “no gifts” or ask for contributions to your child’s college fund.
The Cake
Many grocery stores and bakers offer free smash cakes with the purchase of a full cake or a dozen cupcakes. This is an easy way to save money and cross it off your to-do list!

Remember, this is a party for parents as much as it is for the child. Slow down, take it all in, and really enjoy this wonderful first birthday with your sweet baby.
