Like most recent holidays, we’ll probably be spending Valentine’s Day at home this year. But that doesn’t mean we can’t plan a romantic celebration with those we love the most. Whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day or not, an at-home date night is a great way to slow down, take a break from work and the kids, and spend quality time with your spouse or partner.

We know planning a date night can be daunting, especially when you’re busy. We wanted to share a few tips to make it easier.
Set the Mood
- Keep it Fresh: Don’t just have dinner at your dining room table. Try to find a different location in your house. If nothing else, rent table linens, centerpieces and candles to make your dining room feel a bit more fancy.
- Use the Nice Dishes: Either get out or rent a nice set of matching dishes, silverware and glassware.
- Dress Up: We’ve all been in sweatpants for many months. Why not get out the dresses and ties?
Plan the Menu
- Choose Cocktails: Keep it simple with wine or beer, or try a new cocktail for a fun surprise. Not into alcohol? Look for sparkling juice or a tasty mocktail.
- Plan Multiple Courses: In addition to dinner, prepare an appetizer and a dessert. This will feel more special, and will also extend the amount of time you spend together.
- Keep it Simple: Just because you’re planning more than one course doesn’t mean it needs to be complicated! And when in doubt, get takeout.
- Have a Backup Plan: Whether you’re cooking or ordering in, make sure there’s something ready to go in the fridge or freezer in case the main course is a flop.
Minimize Distractions
This one is a bit more difficult, but not impossible. If you have kids at home, set them up with an easy dinner and a movie in a different room, or plan your date night for after bedtime. Turn off the TV and put your phones away and out of earshot.
