Creative Ideas to Keep Kids Busy This Summer

School’s almost out in Minnesota, which means that summer break is upon us. While students are likely thrilled about three months away from school, many parents approach summer with a fair amount of dread. If you’re wondering how you’re going to keep the kids busy all summer, don’t worry. You’re not alone!

To help parents and kids enjoy the long summer together, we’re sharing a few ideas for keeping kids entertained during the months to come. If you have any ideas of your own, we’d love to hear them.

Plant a garden

Gardening is a great task for kids. It’s inexpensive, easy, and gives kids a sense of accomplishment. Who knows – your child might even eat a few vegetables! Tomatoes, snap peas and strawberries are easy plants for little growers. Once the plants are in the ground, hand over daily maintenance – watering and weeding – to your child. Then, enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of your labor together!

Have a scavenger hunt

Set up a hunt in your neighborhood, leading children to trees and bushes, fire hydrants, lawn ornaments, flags and other neighborhood mainstays. Make notecards for the items, with a fun fact about each, and send your kids out on the hunt!

Go bowling

Did you know that kids can receive two free games of bowling every day at select bowling alleys? Visit kidsbowlfree.com to learn more.

Host an ‘Olympics’

Together with your kids, plan a few Olympic competitions. Invite all the neighborhood kids, hold an opening ceremony, and hand out homemade medals! (Foil yogurt lids make great faux-medals.)

Visit the library

Libraries aren’t just for books anymore! Check your local library for events featuring Legos, movies, puzzles, science and nature, arts and crafts, as well as computer classes and story hours for all ages

Make your own popsicles

Buy an inexpensive popsicle mold and experiment with different flavors, using fruit, herbs and other food items you have on hand.

Go big

If summer boredom has really set in, give us a call. Make this summer one to remember with our inflatables, bubble machine, giant Connect Four or giant Jenga, a duck pond, ladder golf, mini golf, or plain old burlap sacks.

Whatever you do this summer, we hope you enjoy this precious time with your kids – before you know if, they’ll be grown up and you’ll miss these days together.
