Food Safety Tips for Parties
Whether your party is inside or out, big or small, short or long – if food is being served, food safety must be part of the preparations. This is important to protect guests from foodborne illnesses. But with a little planning and food service rental equipment from Broadway, you can serve food safely and easily.
Tips for Food Safety at Parties
According to University of Minnesota Extension, food should not sit at room temperature for more than two hours. Food that sits out for two hours or more should be thrown away.
What Temperature Should Food Stay at To Be Safe?
- Hot food should be kept at 140 degrees F or warmer. Chafing dishes, food warmers, heat lamps, slow cookers or roaster ovens will help keep food at a safe temperature. Be sure to leave the covers on the dishes to maintain an even temperature throughout. Check food temperature often.
- Cold food should be kept at 40 degrees F or colder. Set dishes in ice to help keep them cold. (Our salad bar or fill n’ chill table are great options if you’re serving multiple cold foods.) If you aren’t able to keep dishes in ice, serve food on smaller platters and rotate them in and out of the refrigerator throughout the party.
Keep a Clean Kitchen
- Wash hands before, during, and after food preparation, serving, and cleanup.
- Keep kitchen counters and points of frequent contact (like the refrigerator door handle) clean and sanitized.
- Make sure serving dishes and utensils are clean.
