Make Small Business Saturday a Success
Since its inception 10 years ago, Small Business Saturday has become one of the most profitable days of the year for small and locally-owned companies. Now, as retail stores, restaurants and other small businesses are struggling to stay afloat amidst the pandemic, Small Business Saturday will be more important than ever.
Small Business Saturday was launched in 2010, during the economic recession that had devastated many local companies. Set for the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the goal was to encourage people to skip malls and big-box stores, and support the neighborhood businesses that are so important to communities and local economies. The first event was a success, and Small Business Saturday has grown in popularity every year since.
But with pandemic regulations limiting in-store traffic, businesses will have to shift their tactics this year. Here are a few ideas that will make Small Business Saturday a success.
Get Creative
Because of capacity restrictions, stores won’t be able to hold large, in-person events. Think outside the box! Rent tables, tents, and clothing racks, and take it outside. Stanchions and dividers will help with crowd control. Heaters can help keep shoppers warm. If your store doesn’t have the physical space, consider working with other small businesses to hold joint, socially-distanced events.
Register Your Event
As the official sponsor of Small Business Saturday, American Express offers free marketing materials and other resources to participating companies. If your local Chamber of Commerce or business alliance is publicizing the event, sign your business up for free publicity.
Offer Deals
There’s a lot of competition around Small Business Saturday. Make your business stand out by offering an exciting, exclusive deal, whether it’s offered in-store or online.
Publicize
Start getting the word out well in advance of the big day. Post on social media accounts, send emails, and launch ads. Publicize your deals and build excitement!
Go Digital
Even if you can plan a safe outdoor event, many customers won’t feel safe shopping in person. Offer exclusive digital deals, and make it easy to shop online.
Think to the Future
Use this opportunity to build your brand and connect with customers who will continue to shop with you through the pandemic – and beyond.
